The Role Of A Doula

Doulas make a difference

Since 1980, research has been done to determine the benefits of doula assisted births. These studies showed that there were significant decreases in birth interventions including:

50% decrease in cesarean births
60% decrease in epidurals
40% decrease in the use of pitocin
30% decrease in the use of narcotics
30% decrease in the use of forceps
Overall, a 25% decrease in the length of labour

Statistics taken from: “Mothering the Mother, How a Doula Can Help You Have a Shorter, Easier and Healthier Birth” by Marshall H. Klaus, John H. Kennell, Phyllis H. Klaus

Doulas are non-clinical care providers trained in providing emotional support, physical comfort and informational support throughout pregnancy, labour, delivery and postpartum.  Doulas are independent providers of skilled assistance related to pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Doulas work for you, not your caregiver or hospital. Doulas will respect your decisions and support you in facilitating the kind of experiences you have envisioned for yourself during your birth and as a new mother.

As a birth doula, I will provide evidenced based information on a woman's choices during labour and delivery. I will accompany a woman in labor to help her achieve her goal of a safe and satisfying birth experience.

As a postpartum doula, I help ease the transition into motherhood. I will join a woman at the hospital just after the birth to help establish breastfeeding, and then continue, in her home to provide education, companionship, and nonjudgmental support.
