What does normal birth look like?

A woman’s body was created to grow a baby, give birth and nurture her baby at her breast. Hormones in the woman’s body orchestrate the succession of these events. Any intervention in this process may cause problems that must be managed with medical expertise.

Care practices that support natures plan for a normal birth include:

  1. Labour that begins on its own (written version)Let labour begin on it's own (video version)
  2. Freedom of movement throughout labour (written version) Walk, move, and change positions (video version)
  3. Continuous labour support (written version) Have continuous support (video version)
  4. No routine interventions (written version) Avoid unnecessary interventions (video version)
  5. Spontaneous pushing in upright or gravity neutral positions (written version) Get upright and follow urges to push (video version)
  6. No separation of mother and baby after birth with unlimited opportunity for breastfeeding(written version) Keep your baby with you after birth (video version)

These six care practices are supported by research studies that examine the benefits and risks of medical care practices.
